A report on the protozoan pathogens Perkinsus marinus (dermo) and Haplosporidium nelsoni (msx) in South Carolina shellfish population with an overview of these shellfish pathogens

Abstract
The objectives of the report are: To review current knowledge of Perkinsus marinus in South Carolina oyster populations; To discuss epizootiology of Perkinsus marinus (Dermo), especially with reference to water temperature and salinity; To review current knowledge of Haplosporidium nelsoni (MSX) in South Carolina oyster populations; To discuss these results, in conjunction with those observed previously in other states and finally; To summarize the potential implications of oyster diseases to management of the state s oyster resources, including relevant recommendations and current and future research directions.
