Abstract
The Architectural Survey of Charleston County‟s School Equalization Program, 1951-1955 surveyed a total of thirty-one schools and recorded a total of twenty-eight schools. These schools were constructed or renovated between 1951 and 1955 as part of a statewide effort to equalize black and white public school facilities to maintain segregation. The purpose of the project is to record and photograph all new schools constructed in Charleston County as part of the statewide school equalization program. Several schools included in the project had significant additions constructed as part of the program. The survey compares white and black schools to evaluate the effects of equalization as new schools were similar in construction, design, and setting and makes recommendations for each school‟s eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
