Abstract
Essay providing a brief history of the "Port Royal experiment" (Beaufort County, S.C.) and its archaeological remains, on territory captured early in the Civil War by Union troops in which former slaves farmed land abandoned by plantation owners with the help of several private Northern charity organizations.
