South Carolina has a wide variety of coastal river systems, which include extensive systems with a large freshwater discharge. These estuaries are import ant not only for their freshwater discharge, but also for their finfish and shellfish populations and for their scenic and recreational value. The goal of this study was to determine spatial and temporal salinity trends in major South Carolina estuaries on a long-term basis. This study has provided a long-term description of salinity regimes in major South Carolina estuaries.
