Abstract
The WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is associated with the WIC Program and is a seasonal USDA food assistance program created by Congress in 1992 to: Provide resources to WIC participants in the form of fresh, nutritious, unprepared foods, (fruits, vegetables, and cooking herbs) from local farmers’ markets and to expand the awareness, use of, and sales at local farmers’ markets. Women must fall into one of the following categories: pregnant, breastfeeding, or post-partum. Infants must be between ages 6 – 11 months, and children between the ages of 1-5. Due to limited funding, the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is not statewide. All eligible participants must receive benefits from a site where the SC WIC FMNP is available. The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) is responsible for the effective and efficient administration of the WIC FMNP in accordance with 7 CFR 248.
