Abstract
The South Carolina coastal zone contains over 70 marinas, many of which predate OCRM regulations requiring newly constructed or expanded marinas to have an approved deed restricted upland spoil site, or to be able to demonstrate permanent access to such a site for the disposal of dredged spoil material. The Council on Coastal Futures released a report in June 2004 outlining recommendations that deal with the South Carolina coast and its proper management of marina dredging permitting. One of the recommendations made by the Council was the dev(~Jopment of a coast-wide dredging and spoil disposal assessment for the South Carolina coastal zone and its marinas. Thomas & Hutton Engineering Co. has been requested by the South Carolina DHEC' s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management to assist in the development of a dredge and spoil disposal needs assessment for the coastal marinas of South Carolina. A questionnaire was developed outlining specific issues and information regarding the marina location, size, operations, dredging, and spoil disposal history, and expected future needs. This survey was sent to coastal marinas based on lists obtained from OCRM and the South Carolina Marina Association.
