South Carolina Air Program : a Decade and Beyond 1990-2005

South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Bureau of Air Quality
Abstract
The goal of ensuring that all South Carolinians enjoy clean air continues to be a challenge for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (DHEC) Air Program. While we continue to appreciate good air quality in South Carolina, a growing population makes it more challenging to maintain clean air that meets changes in federal environmental standards. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that South Carolina gained 43,000 residents from July 2002-2003. This year’s publication reviews more than a decade of South Carolina’s air quality. Reviewing the past decade and beyond and highlighting significant trends and changes in air quality help the public understand the positive impact on and the continuous improvement made since 1990. Since the passage of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA), the Air Program has played an important role in maintaining national air quality standards in South Carolina.
