South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Bureau of Air Quality
Abstract
The goal of ensuring that all South Carolinians enjoy clean air continues to be a challenge for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (Department) Bureau of Air Quality (Bureau). While we continue to appreciate good air quality in South Carolina, a growing population challenges our state to maintain clean air as federal environmental standards become stricter. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that S.C. gained over 395,000 residents from 2000 to 2009, for a population increase of almost 10 percent in seven years. This publication reviews trends in South Carolina’s air quality. Reviewing the trends and changes in air quality data may help the public understand the positive impacts and the continuous improvements made to the state’s air quality since 1990. Since the passage of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA), the Air Program has played an important role in maintaining attainment of national air quality standards in South Carolina.
