Ely "Eli" Kershaw, Cheraw Invoice Book, 1769

Kershaw, Ely
Abstract
Ledger from Ely Kershaw’s store opened in the village of Cheraw; contains transaction information for customers, purchases, and prices from 1769 to 1774. “This ledger was used to record goods coming to, and from Eli Kershaw’s mercantile in Cheraw prior to the American Revolution. His older brother, Joseph Kershaw, established a mercantile in South Carolina’s first inland town, Camden, during the mid-1700s. The Cheraw mercantile was an expansion of the Kershaws’ trade business. It is valuable insight into those things that were bought and sold in the sandhills region of the colony of South Carolina.” (Description in quotes was provided by Stacey Ferguson at Historic Camden).
