Abstract
The South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS) is a defined benefit retirement plan administered by PEBA for employees of state agencies, public higher education institutions, public school districts, charter schools and other local subdivisions of government that have joined SCRS, as well as individuals first elected to the South Carolina General Assembly on or after November 6, 2012. This handbook provides a general introduction to SCRS and its plan benefits. If you are eligible and elect to participate in the State Optional Retirement Program (State ORP) defined contribution plan in lieu of SCRS.
