Abstract
Beginning with 1983 data, the Office of Vital Records and Public Health Statistics initiated the coding and computerization of the decedent's usual occupation and industry as recorded on death certificates. This information had been recorded on the certificate since 1969 and represented an untapped resource for epidemiologic research into occupational mortality. This document is the first report which utilizes industry data from the death certificate. It is a basic informational document presenting the leading underlying causes of death within each major industry group for South Carolina residents, aged 16-99, who died during calendar year 1983. Along with the number of deaths for each leading cause of death within an industry, the percent of deaths due to each cause is presented for each industry.
