This document is intended for use by federal and state agencies, plantation managers, and consultants that work with the National Historic Preservation Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, and rice fields. When planning a project in a historic rice field system, early consultation with the SHPO is important and encouraged. The guidance begins with a brief overview of the history and a description of two types of rice fields, inland and tidal. After the history, the document has definitions of key words; a discussion of Section 106, the National Register of Historic Places, and rice fields; and suggestions for further reading.Collections
