Chicora Foundation was requested on July 7, 1993 by Middleton Place Foundation to prepare a proposal addressing specific archaeological investigations requested by the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office. The need for this archaeological study was necessitated by Middleton Place's grant to stabilize portions of the mill damaged in 1989 by Hurricane Hugo. The second phase of the work, consisting of monitoring work conducted by Middleton Place contractors, was conducted on October 18, 1993 and again on December 17, 1993. This second phase of work is the primary topic of this study.
