In 2016, there were a total of 39 people murdered by a household member, according to the South Carolina definition. Of those 39 people, 34 were women, constituting 87 percent of the total, and five were men, constituting 13 percent of the total. The demographics of the victims were as follows: 51 percent were White, 46 percent were African American and three percent were Hispanic/ Latino. The average age of these victims was 42 years old.
