People with HIV infection are affected disproportionally by viral hepatitis. Nearly 75% of people with HIV who report a history of injection drug use also are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). HIV/HCV coinfection more than triples the risk for liver disease, liver failure, and liver-related death.
