Glorified Patchwork : South Carolina Crazy Quilts

Horton, Laurel
Abstract
Crazy quilts are a distinctive form of American needlework which developed and flourished in the late nineteenth century. Characterized by the joining of irregularly shaped pieces of fabric, crazy quilts are often highly embellished with embroidery, including decorative outline stitches as well as pictorial and symbolic motifs. Although crazy quilts include a wide array of fabrics, rich materials such as silks, satins and plushes are most often associated with high-style examples.
