Abstract
The 100 largest public water supplies in South Carolina are using an average of 500 million gallons per day in the year 2000. This amount of water, three-fourths of it from lakes and streams and the rest from wells and springs is produced by 66 of the 100 largest systems. The other 34 systems buy all or part of their water from various members of the 66. The total public-supply usage in South Carolina is about 530 million gallons per day. The five largest supplies are Columbia, Greenville, Charleston, Spartanburg, and Anderson. Sumter, ranking seventh in size, is the largest using only ground water. The range in pumpage for the 100 largest systems is 57 million gallons per day for the largest to 1 million gallons per day for the smallest.
