Established in 1917 by the South Carolina State Highway Commission, the agency was first named the Division of Automobile Licensing and Registration. The Department of Motor Vehicles became a separate agency from the Department of Public Safety in 2003. The Department of Motor Vehicles administers the state's motor vehicle licensing and titling laws.
