The first Board of Medical Examiners of South Carolina began shortly after the 1800s. At one period in the 1890's medical licensure was handled by county boards and not by a central state board. The present Board of Medical Examiners was formed in 1920 with the responsibility of regulating the practices of nursing, chiropractic, and naturopathy, etc. In the 1930s the other health professions formed their own examining boards. In 1969 this Board became a composite board for medicine and osteopathy and merged with other licensing agencies in 1994 as part of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
