Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum

The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum serves as the state's military history museum by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting South Carolina's military material culture and by providing educational programming.

Founded in 1896, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the third oldest museum in the state. The museum focuses on South Carolina’s military history from the Revolutionary War to the present.

Originally housed in the SC State House, the museum relocated to the War Memorial Building adjacent to the University of South Carolina in the mid-twentieth century. In 1998, it became an agency of the South Carolina Budget and Control Board and in 2002, moved to the Columbia Mills Building. The museum expanded in 2007, converting the old mill’s former cistern into a new gallery that showcases special, large-scale exhibitions. In 2015, the Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum again became its own separate agency.
