The African American History Monument Commission was established by Act 457 of 1996 to determine the design and location on the grounds of the State House a monument dedicated to the collective history of African-Americans in South Carolina. Since no state appropriations were to be provided for its construction, the Commission was empowered to create a tax-exempt nonprofit for the specific role of fundraising. All funds for the monument were gained through private donations from individuals and organizations. A secondary task of the Commission was to study the feasibility of establishing an African-American History Museum and report back to the State House Committee on its findings. The Commission ceased activity in 2001.
