Created in 1935, the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission oversees the safety and development of the state's public use airports, provides safe and reliable air transportation for the state government and business prospects, and provides aviation education opportunities. The oversight committee was established in 2004 within the Department of Commerce, and in 2009, the Aeronautics Commission and Division of Aeronautics moved under the State Budget and Control Board. The South Carolina Budget and Control Board ceased existing July 1, 2015, and the Commission and Division then moved under the South Carolina State Fiscal Accountability Authority.
