The Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) Transcripts of Tombstone Inscriptions in South Carolina is a collection of 67 microfiche format negatives that were filmed by the South Carolina Historical Society in 1981. Designated as Series SCHS 50-278, this collection is comprised of thousands of cemetery tombstone transcriptions, handwritten or typed on individual cards, arranged alphabetically by surname, except for one group included in the appendix. The transcriptions represent nearly 4,000 individuals buried in 350 historical cemeteries across the state of South Carolina. The microfilming of these cards was done by the South Carolina Historical Society in cooperation with the South Carolina Genealogical Society. They were transcribed by members of the local chapters of the South Carolina Genealogical Society from the typescript volumes of inscriptions compiled by the W.P.A. in the late 1930s. Those volumes, arranged by county and cemetery, are in the collections of the South Caroliniana Library of the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina. The original handwritten or typescript cards are in the collections of the South Carolina Historical Society at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina.
