    The economic impact of South Carolina’s arts-related economic cluster

    The purpose of this study is to estimate the economic impact of the portion of the creative cluster in South Carolina associated with all arts, design, crafts, and related activities - defined specifically as the "artsrelated cluster." Arts and culture are essential to any region’s quality of life and local identity, and as such can serve as an engine of economic development through improving tourism and helping a region attract and retain skilled labor. This latter benefit is especially important in 2023 as South Carolina and the United States continue to face a significant labor shortage that has emerged following the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Strategic plan FY2021-2025

    From October 2019 to March 2020, agency teams conducted 17 in-person meetings from the mountains to the coast and gathered additional input via an online survey that was offered in English and Spanish. More than 1,000 constituents shared their thoughts and opinions during the Canvass of the People 2020. From this public input, the agency crafted an updated vision, mission, and set of values that, along with the new strategic plan, will guide the Arts Commission’s work for the foreseeable future.

    The Art of Community : Rural SC

    Taproots : a study in cultural exploration

    In the spring of 1975, six schools (Briggs Elementary, Florence, Camden High School, Camden, Columbia High School, Columbia, York High School, York, Blue Ridge High School, Greenville County, Greenville High School, Greenville) from five sites in South Carolina participated in a Special Bi-Centennial Project, a Cultural Exploration Program sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Commission and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Basically, the idea was to encourage students (elementary through high school) to take notice of their own surroundings as subject matter - an idea which caught and sparkled for them in a hundred directions, as evidenced in these pages.

    South Carolina’s Arts-Related Economic Cluster : Summary

    Researchers at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina analyzed 2014 data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis, regarding the South Carolina economy associated with the arts and design, crafts, and related activities. The results of the analysis reveal that arts-related economic activities in the state generate a core impact of $9.7 billion.

    Arts in Basic Curriculum : 20-Year Anniversary Evaluation

    The Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Project has ensured students throughout South Carolina have a quality, comprehensive arts education for 20 years. Through funding, research, advocacy and training and technical assistance, the Project has been a model for a number of advancements in arts education. The statewide focus, the creation of arts education standards and curriculum, the success of its advocacy and its inroads on arts education assessment and integration mark the ABC Project as a significant leader in the field of arts education. At its 20th anniversary, the ABC Project engaged an independent evaluator to explore the Project’s impact at this stage of its history. This report captures the findings of this 20-year evaluation.
