In 1959, production of gem stones in South Carolina was limited to small amounts of sillimanite from Oconee County, tourmaline from Spartanburg County, and miscellaneous gem stones from Lexington County. The clay deposits sampled in this study are a small fraction of the deposits that exist in the Coastal Plain, but they provide a clear indication of the types of clays that are available. Material suitable for almost any particular structural clay product can be found at one or more places.
