(South Carolina State Library, 2004) South Carolina Department of Education
State Board of Education Regulation 43-220 specifies requirements and procedures for identifying gifted and talented students. As described R 43-220, the purposes of the identification process are - to find students who display characteristics of the gifted and talented (i.e., ability or potential for high performance in academic areas); to assess the aptitudes, attributes, and behaviors of each student; and to evaluate each student for the purposes of placement. (24 S.C. Code Ann. Regs. 43-220.2(B)(1)) This description reflects South Carolina’s definition of gifted and talented in R 43-220: “Gifted and talented students are those who are identified in grades one through twelve as demonstrating high-performance ability or potential in academic and/or artistic areas and therefore require an educational program beyond that normally provided by the general school program in order to achieve their potential” (24 S.C. Code Ann. Regs. 43-220.1(A)(1)).

South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Standards 2003
(South Carolina State Library, 2003) South Carolina Department of Education
South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Standards 2003 presents what all of our state’s children should know and be able to do in the arts. This comprehensive document addresses dance, music, theatre, and visual arts standards from preschool through advanced high school arts courses. It is intended to be used by policy makers, education administrators, teachers, and instructional and community leaders as a concise statement about expectations for learning in the arts and as the basis for curricula, instruction, and assessment in the four arts disciplines. This document represents a statewide consensus that has evolved from the dedicated work of hundreds of educators and artists. The process began with the development of the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Framework in 1993. The next year, the document National Standards for Arts Education was made available nationwide, and in 1999 the State Department of Education’s South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Standards was published. Dance, music, theatre, and visual arts students are heirs to excellent arts opportunities and programs because of the vision and resolve of generations of devoted arts educators in our state and throughout the nation. The South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Standards 2003 should serve as the foundation of a complete quality arts education system.

South Carolina Academic Standards and Performance Indicators for Science
(South Carolina State Library, 2014-11) South Carolina Department of Education
Science is a method of learning about the physical universe by applying the principles of the scientific inquiry, which includes making empirical observations, proposing hypotheses to explain those observations, and testing those hypotheses in valid and reliable ways. Science is also, therefore, the organized body of knowledge that results from scientific inquiry. This document, South Carolina Science Academic Standards, contains the academic standards in science for the state’s students in kindergarten through grade twelve. Beginning in 2004, the term for the state-approved expectations for student learning and academic performance in South Carolina was changed from curriculum standards to academic standards. In accordance with the South Carolina Education Accountability Act of 1998 (S.C. Code Ann. § 59-18-110), State Board of Education Regulation 43-234 explains the purpose of academic standards thusly: Each school district board of trustees will ensure quality schooling by providing a rigorous, relevant curriculum for all students. Each school district must use the academic achievement standards adopted by the State Board of Education to push schools and students toward high performance by aligning the state assessments to those standards and linking policies and criteria for performance standards, accreditation, reporting, school rewards, and targeted assistance.
