State Library

A Library Extension agency was established by the General Assembly in 1929 to assist towns and counties in the development of public libraries. There were no funds appropriated, but a State Library Board was created. Under the Works Project Administration a statewide library program developed from 1935 to 1943. The objective was to provide some form of public library service in each county of the state.

The Board became an official state agency in 1969, with duties to provide for public library development, library service for state institutions, service for the blind and physically handicapped, and library service to state government agencies.
